An Informed Community

Hello, library and information enthusiasts! Now that we have a better understanding of my local library, I want to speak about the surrounding communities. Indeed, the concept of a library is directly related to the community, considering that members of the local community constitute the majority of library users. Grassy Park and its surrounding areas are rife with information centres besides public libraries: internet cafĂ©’s, libraries, community centres, etcetera. One favourite of mine is the book store, and fortunately the book store is still a popular centre for information in the modern world. One book store in particular that I want to discuss is Bargain Books in Diep River, which is about a ten-minute drive away from my house. I have frequented this book store for years now, due to it being a factory store and, consequently, having affordable prices. Besides Library and Information Sciences, I chose English as an elective module for my degree, and on this parti...

Library Visit

Hello, library and information enthusiasts! I think it is past due that I give a detailed observation of my local library . Due to COVID-19, libraries are quite restrictive with the amount of library users inside the building at any given time. Fortunately, I visited my local library at the perfect time, allowing me free reign to explore every nook and cranny. During my visit there were only around two library users other than myself, which is most certainly a side-effect of the pandemic. Hopefully the gradual lifting of restrictions will encourage more people to use the library as the months go by. On a lighter note, I am glad to say that Grassy Park Public Library has quite a lar...

As of the date of this blog post, I am a third-year Library and Information Sciences student at the University of the Western Cape. I have started this blog as part of an academic assignment and simply as a platform to express my view on the importance of Library and Information Sciences in my community. Grassy Park can be be both homely and lively, and what I mean by this is that the residential areas are often quiet, yet within walking distance one can find the suburb’s array of bustling shops and businesses. These businesses consist of anything from supermarkets, to butcheries, to clothing shops; one can even find the odd printing store. Ironically, the local library somehow forms part of this hustle and bustle. Indeed, after just a few weeks of living here one would be able to deduce ...
